Jayden Daniels shines while Deebo Samuel and Croskey-Merritt spark offense; Washington’s defense overwhelms New York in Week 1 opener.
The Washington Commanders began their 2025 NFL campaign with a statement 21–6 home victory over the New York Giants. Quarterback Jayden Daniels led the charge with over 300 total yards, blending precision passing with dynamic rushing to energize his squad.
Deebo Samuel, the team’s high-profile acquisition, further boosted the offense garnering 77 receiving yards and sealing the game with a versatile rushing touchdown. His multi-dimensional skill set quickly became a focal point under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s creative play-calling. Rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt delivered an explosive performance, racking up 82 rushing yards and a TD, while veteran tight end Zach Ertz and wide receiver Terry McLaurin added depth to the offense.
Washington’s defense imposed its will, consistently pressuring Russell Wilson and thwarting multiple red-zone attempts. Standouts included Daron Payne with a key sack and batted passes, plus tight coverage from Marshon Lattimore and Trey Amos. The Commanders outgained the Giants in total offense and allowed no offensive touchdowns.
For the Giants, expectations built through the preseason quickly unraveled. Offensive line breakdowns and red-zone inefficiency kept them from scoring a touchdown. Russell Wilson’s debut was rocky: 17-of-37 passing for just 168 yards, while the team failed to punch it in despite reaching the goal line twice. The offense produced a mere 231 total yards. Defensively, they struggled to contain Washington’s ground game and offered little resistance. To make matters worse, linebacker Micah McFadden exited early with a leg injury, further derailing their rhythm.
