New Era in New Orleans: Kellen Moore Debuts Against Chargers in 2025 Preseason Opener

The New Orleans Saints will kick off their 2025 season with a road game against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday August 10 at SoFi Stadium. It will mark the official head coaching debut of Kellen Moore as he faces his former team. Moore arrives with a Super Bowl ring after a standout season as offensive coordinator for the Eagles. Now he takes the reins of a young and rebuilding team. On the other sideline is Jim Harbaugh who returns to the NFL after winning the national championship with Michigan.

Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough are all battling for the starting quarterback role. Rattler threw for 1317 yards and four touchdowns in 2024. Shough arrives from Texas Tech with mobility and sharp decision-making while Haener looks to bounce back after an injury. Alvin Kamara remains the offensive focal point as the franchise’s all-time leader in both yardage and touchdowns. He is joined by wide receivers Chris Olave, Brandin Cooks and Rashid Shaheed. The offensive line is built around four first-round draft picks and Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy.

New defensive coordinator Brandon Staley recently coached the Chargers and now leads a unit anchored by linebacker Demario Davis and defensive end Cameron Jordan who has totaled 121.5 career sacks. Bryan Bresee had 7.5 sacks last year and Marshon Lattimore returns to the secondary after injury.
