Despite winning the second game of the series, the San Diego Padres failed to clinch the series victory in the third game.

SECOND GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Nick Pivetta earned a win after an excellent performance, improving to a 9-2 record. Mick Abel gave up five runs on walks with terrible pitching, gifting the Padres an early lead. He was quickly replaced by the Phillies bullpen in the second inning. Despite leading by 6 runs, the Phillies narrowed the gap after Nick Pivetta was taken out. San Diego’s batting left much to be desired — the Padres managed to score only one more run after Mick Abel left the field.

THIRD GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Dylan Cease continues to struggle away from Petco Park, and once again proved it in the series against the Phillies: two home runs allowed, eight hits, and four runs. He needs to show more commitment to the team. The disappointing Padres offense managed just one run, thanks to an RBI from Jackson Merrill. Eduarniel Núñez, a Dominican pitcher, made his MLB debut as part of the Padres bullpen but gave up two walks and a hit to the opposing team. Manny Machado was invisible in the game, despite being recently selected as the National League’s third baseman in the MLB All-Star Game — and even being allowed to play as a designated hitter. It’s worth noting that the Padres failed to hit a single home run in the entire series, while the Phillies hit four. San Diego must urgently improve its offense if it wants to be a serious contender for the World Champion Series.
