After weeks of speculation, the sale of Club Querétaro has been officially confirmed. The club has been acquired by a group led by Marc Spiegel, an American businessman and founder of the investment firm Innovatio Capital. According to Forbes, the deal values the club at over $120 million USD, marking a major step into a new era in Liga MX, with a rising wave of foreign capital entering the league.
Spiegel, who previously attempted to purchase England’s Charlton Athletic, stated that his team had evaluated over 200 sports projects worldwide. They ultimately saw the greatest potential in Mexico, with Querétaro standing out as a city experiencing economic growth and robust business activity — making it a strategic investment for the group.
This acquisition also aligns with Liga MX's ongoing efforts to eliminate multi-ownership, aiming to bring the league in line with FIFA regulations. It also paves the way for a possible multi-million-dollar investment from Apollo Global Management, which remains in negotiations to acquire a stake in the league’s commercial rights.
Querétaro is expected to be just the beginning. Reports suggest that at least three other clubs could change ownership in the coming months — particularly those currently linked to corporate groups such as Caliente, Orlegi, Pachuca, and Salinas.
While rumors circulated about a potential relocation of the team, Spiegel and his partners firmly denied it, assuring that “Querétaro stays in Querétaro.” The group’s focus will now shift toward modernizing both the club’s sporting model and commercial operations, including enhancements in data analytics, ticketing, sponsorship, and licensing.
The sale of Gallos Blancos marks the beginning of a new chapter for Mexican football, one in which foreign investment could reshape not just team valuations, but the very way Liga MX clubs operate on and off the pitch.
