New beginnings often set the tone for an entire season, and San Diego FC made it clear from opening night that its second year in MLS could be even better than the first. In front of 25,412 fans at Snapdragon Stadium, the California side delivered a commanding 5-0 victory over CF Montréal in the first official meeting between the two clubs.

Mikey Varas’ team took control from the start. Christopher McVey opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a precise header off an Anders Dreyer corner kick, marking the club’s first goal of the 2026 campaign. Just before halftime, Amahl Pellegrino capitalized on a rebound to make it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time. The momentum carried into the second half, as Onni Valakari extended the lead in the 54th minute, Marcus Ingvartsen added the fourth in the 59th, and 18-year-old Right to Dream Academy graduate Bryan Zamblé sealed the rout in the 85th minute, scoring in his professional debut just four minutes after coming on as a substitute.

San Diego secured its first-ever home opener win and recorded its 20th regular-season victory in club history. The squad’s depth was on full display, with four players registering two goal contributions on the night, led by Anders Dreyer’s pair of assists.

After the match, head coach Mikey Varas praised the team’s mentality and emphasized the importance of maintaining competitive hunger. He noted that the group always wants more, regardless of the scoreline, and highlighted the impact of the young debutants. Amahl Pellegrino applauded the home atmosphere and the team’s commitment, while Aníbal Godoy acknowledged that there are still defensive transition details to improve.

San Diego FC now turns its attention to hosting St. Louis CITY SC on March 1 at Snapdragon Stadium, carrying strong momentum after a dominant performance that delivered not only three points, but also a powerful statement of intent for the 2026 season.
