The FIFA World Cup has captured the attention of fans around the globe, especially with the United States serving as host. But this weekend, soccer returned to San Diego. After the city's last major match featuring Colombia's national team in an international friendly, Snapdragon Stadium once again hosted NWSL action with a marquee matchup between San Diego Wave FC and Gotham FC, the reigning 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup champions after defeating the Kansas City Current. The match also took place during the Fourth of July celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States' Independence.

San Diego Wave made another statement with a 2-0 victory to extend its lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The breakthrough came just before halftime when Kennedy Wesley spotted Melanie Barcenas near midfield and delivered a perfectly timed pass. The 18-year-old turned toward goal and unleashed a stunning long-range strike that beat goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and found the top corner to give the Wave the lead.

Beyond the spectacular goal, Barcenas delivered one of the most memorable moments of the night with her celebration. With club legend Alex Morgan in attendance, the young forward paid tribute by recreating Morgan's iconic tea-drinking celebration, a gesture that brought back memories for Wave supporters and U.S. Women's National Team fans alike.

San Diego remained in control throughout the second half and sealed the victory in the closing minutes. Tatum Wynalda pressured Berger outside the penalty area and intercepted her pass before the ball fell to rookie Lia Godfrey, who quickly slipped a perfectly weighted through ball to Trinity Byars. The forward beat her defender and calmly finished into the open net to complete the 2-0 win, giving the Wave its fourth clean sheet of the 2026 season while reinforcing its position atop the NWSL standings.
