The Toros de Tijuana remain atop both the North Division and the overall standings of the 2026 Mexican Baseball League, a position they have earned under the leadership of manager Roberto Kelly. However, staying at the top requires overcoming the league’s toughest opponents, and few teams have posed a greater challenge than the Sultanes de Monterrey.

On May 29, the Toros welcomed Monterrey to Mobil Park for the opening game of another highly anticipated series between two of the league’s premier franchises. The visitors entered with momentum after winning the previous series in Tijuana and continued that success by taking the first game. Despite their strong pitching staff, productive lineup, and home-field advantage, the Toros were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and fell short in the series opener.

The rivalry between these clubs has produced several memorable moments over the years. One of the most significant came during the 2022 North Division Championship Series, when the Sultanes eliminated Tijuana from the postseason. Since then, every matchup between the two teams has carried added importance, particularly as a measuring stick for the Toros’ championship aspirations.

The loss also marked the first defeat of the season for Tijuana’s starting pitcher, whose record dropped to 3-1. Meanwhile, Monterrey’s starter improved to 4-2 with the victory. With the series still underway, the Toros will have another opportunity to respond and prove they can overcome one of the opponents that has consistently stood in their way. The question remains: Can Tijuana finally win a series against Monterrey this season—and potentially defeat them in the playoffs?
