As part of Matchday 3 of the 2025 Apertura tournament in Liga BBVA MX, Club Tijuana hosted FC Juárez at Estadio Caliente in a match defined by intensity, defensive structure, and a high-pressure finish that ended in a 1-1 draw. The first half was tight, with few clear chances for either side. Xolos opted for a low block and quick transitions. Possession favored the visitors with 63%, while Tijuana looked more direct when recovering the ball. Mora played a key role in stretching the field from the middle, while Unai was solid in defensive midfield.
The scoreboard changed in the 52nd minute after a left-wing cross from Gilberto Mora. The ball, aimed at Shamar Nicholson, was deflected into the net by a Juárez defender in an unfortunate own goal. With the 1-0 lead, Xolos sought a second goal through better ball circulation and high pressing. Shamar, despite being heavily marked, was crucial in holding up play and drawing fouls. One of the most controversial moments came with a possible penalty on Adonis Preciado that the referee chose not to call, despite protests from the crowd and the bench. Offensively, new Brazilian signing Vitinho had a tough outing after coming off the bench, struggling with possession and passing accuracy, which drew murmurs from the stands.
Juárez found the equalizer in the 82nd minute through Ángel Zaldívar, following a well-executed combination with Jairo Torres, who had come on with good energy. Despite Tijuana’s final push, the scoreboard did not change. With an attendance of 18,133 fans, Estadio Caliente saw the match end with mixed emotions and some boos toward the stadium sound system when it called for support in the final minutes. In the post-match press conference, the Xolos manager emphasized the importance of maintaining defensive solidity and continuing to improve offensive transitions. He also pointed out that the squad is beginning to develop key on-field partnerships and adapting to the system.
The next match for the ‘Border City Dogs’ will be in the Leagues Cup, where they will face LA Galaxy this Thursday, July 31, at Dignity Health Sports Park.
