On the traditional Friday night Liga MX fixture, reigning back-to-back champions Toluca made the most of their home advantage and defeated Xolos de Tijuana 1-0 at Estadio Nemesio Díez. The border club arrived carrying a string of consecutive draws that have cost them valuable points against so-called accessible opponents such as San Luis and Puebla, along with a hard-fought draw against Monterrey. However, in Toluca it once again became clear that momentum strongly favors the Red Devils.
The match followed the pattern that has defined Toluca throughout the tournament. Antonio Mohamed’s side delivered another masterclass in their attacking style. For many observers, there is currently no team playing better football in the league. Toluca is firing on all cylinders and boasts a striker in outstanding form in Portuguese forward Pauliño, who once again showed why he is considered one of the most decisive attackers in the competition. The only goal of the match came in the first half and proved enough to secure all three points for the hosts.
As for Xolos, the team took the field but failed to display a competitive level capable of seriously troubling their opponent. The squad led by Sebastián Abreu continues to raise questions about its overall structure and ability to close out matches. After the game, “El Loco” Abreu addressed talk of a potential crisis due to the run of draws, comparing the situation to that of other clubs such as Mazatlán in an effort to ease pressure surrounding the lack of victories.
Tijuana’s outlook grows more complicated as the tournament reaches its midpoint. In addition to the absence of wins, the team remains without two of its most important players, Gilberto Mora and Frank Boya. Boya is expected to return to the starting lineup soon, while there is still little clarity regarding Mora’s availability. With no play-in round this season, the path to the playoffs becomes narrower, making every dropped point more costly.
Meanwhile, Toluca continues to build a strong case as a legitimate title contender. Defensive organization, a dynamic attack, and a striker in top form support their ambitions. Mohamed’s team is not only winning, but convincing, and is emerging as one of the clear favorites heading toward the decisive stage of the championship.
