It is the start of a new tournament. Each club has its own goals, but for Xolos, the objective must be to qualify for the Liguilla. They are coming off a terrible streak of seasons without making the playoffs (except for the one led by Professor Osorio), but it is something the team is used to, constantly fighting in the lower spots of the table and relegation standings. The removal of relegation has kept them comfortable in those positions. It is also worth considering that Grupo Caliente owns two teams, Xolos and Gallos Blancos — or rather, used to. Yesterday, news broke that Querétaro was sold and will now enjoy the independence every football club desires. Of course, before the sale was finalized, Xolos claimed all the players they wanted from Gallos.

Let’s not forget that this match marked the league debut of new head coach Sebastián Abreu, the football journeyman. He certainly has the international experience to implement different playing styles and polish the team’s raw diamond, Gilberto Mora, who returns from a successful run with the national team, winning the Gold Cup and breaking records as the youngest player to register an assist and to win the tournament in an official Gold Cup match.

Back to the game, the starting eleven did not generate much excitement, as outside of Mora, there was no standout player from either Xolos or Querétaro. The match began with Xolos pushing forward on the attack, taking advantage of their home field. They fired some shots from outside the box, all of which were skillfully saved by the new goalkeeper J. Hernández, formerly of Atlas. The team’s main tactic was to attack down the flanks and deliver crosses into the box, hoping for a finish from someone in the area. We saw this same drill during their warmups.

The few chances they had were not dangerous, a clear reminder that “Viernes Botanero” is back. But luckily, a special guest arrived — Mr. Goal, or rather, his brother Own Goal. On a play down the right wing, a cross was aimed at Nicholson, whose header was blocked by J. Hernández. A second low cross then looked for Unai Bilbao, who was being marked by two defenders. With the speed of the ball, O. Mendoza ended up scoring the only goal of the match (an own goal) just before halftime. The second half had nothing worth noting.

In the end, three points and a clean sheet for the team. Although the result was positive, it did not convince most of the 18,000 fans in attendance. Still, a win is a win, and it is a good way to start the tournament.
